Best New Orleans Suburbs

New Orleans is the biggest city in Louisiana not far from the Gulf of Mexico. Destrehan and Elmwood are considered the best suburbs near New Orleans and have plenty of housing, a low cost of living, and are only about 15 minutes from the city. Destrehan is in St. Charles Parish and has a suburban rural feel that young professionals love. Elmwood is in Jefferson Parish and is mostly young professionals. It has more of an urban feel with most of the population being renters so there are plenty of affordable apartments, as well as an overabundance of coffee shops, restaurants, and bars.

Two of the country’s largest private universities are in New Orleans (Tulane and Loyola) and much of the economy is based on the port, oil refineries, petrochemical production, commercial fishing, and a huge tourism service trade. The cost of living is a mixed bag with many services being lower than the national average and others being slightly higher. And one of the best things about living in New Orleans is the daily commute which is about 23 minutes each way. That means you won’t spend all your time sitting in traffic as is common in other large cities.
